How to Calculate Tiles Needed

Calculating the number of tiles is straightforward but requires accounting for waste:

Tiles = (Room Area / Tile Area) × (1 + Waste Factor)

For example, a 10m × 8m room (80 m²) with 30cm × 30cm tiles (0.09 m² per tile) and 10% waste would need:

  • 80 ÷ 0.09 = 889 tiles (base)
  • 889 × 1.10 = 978 tiles (with 10% waste)

🛠️ Installer Pro Tips

Buy All Tiles from the Same Batch

Tile colors can vary slightly between production batches. Always check the batch number on the box and buy all your tiles from the same batch to ensure uniform color.

Diagonal Layouts Need More Waste

If you are doing a diagonal (45-degree) tile pattern, increase your waste factor to 15-20% because of the extra edge cuts.

⚠️ Common Mistake: Not Ordering a Few Extra Boxes

Don't order the EXACT number of tiles. Even with a 10% waste factor built in, always buy an extra box or two. Tiles get discontinued, and if one cracks 6 months later, you won't be able to match the color perfectly from a new batch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how many tiles I need?

Calculate the area to be tiled (length × width), then divide by the area of one tile. Always add 10-15% extra for cuts, breakage, and future repairs.

Why should I add extra tiles beyond my calculation?

You need extra tiles for three reasons: edge cuts and trimming (waste), accidental breakage during installation, and having spares for future repairs if a tile cracks.

What tile sizes are most common?

Common tile sizes include 12×12 inches (30×30 cm), 6×6 inches (15×15 cm), 18×18 inches (45×45 cm), and 12×24 inches (30×60 cm) for floors. Wall tiles are often smaller, like 4×4 inches.
