Planning Your Gravel Project

Whether you're laying a new driveway, creating a walking path, or filling a drainage trench, calculating the right amount of material is key. Gravel is sold by the ton or cubic yard, and density varies significantly between material types.

💡 Pro Tip: The Compaction Factor

"Loose gravel will settle and compact over time, especially if driven on. I always recommend ordering 10-15% more than your exact calculation. It's much cheaper to have a small pile left over for touch-ups than to pay for a second delivery truck."

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate for a circular area?

For a circle, measure the diameter (width across the center). The formula is π × (radius)² × depth. Or simply estimate it as a square and you'll have a little extra.

Can I lay gravel over grass?

Not recommended. The grass will die and rot, causing the gravel to sink unevenly. It's best to remove the sod and topsoil, lay landscape fabric, and then add gravel.

What is "pea gravel"?

Pea gravel consists of small, smooth, rounded stones. It's great for walking paths and patios because it's comfortable to walk on, but it doesn't lock together well for driveways.
