How to Choose the Right TV Size

Buying a new TV is exciting, but size matters. The goal is to fill enough of your field of view to create an immersive experience without causing eye strain.

Resolution Matters

  • 4K Ultra HD: You can sit closer to a 4K TV because the pixels are smaller. Recommended distance is 1 to 1.5 times the screen size.
  • 1080p Full HD: You need to sit further back to avoid seeing pixels. Recommended distance is 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen size.

💡 Expert Tip: Go Bigger!

Buyer's remorse usually happens when people buy a TV that's too small, not too big. For a cinematic experience (THX standard), divide your viewing distance (in inches) by 0.84.
Example: 10 feet (120 inches) / 0.84 = 142 inch screen! (Or realistically, an 85-inch TV/Projector).

⚠️ Common Mistake: Mounting Too High

The center of your TV screen should be at eye level when you are seated. This is usually about 42 inches from the floor. Mounting a TV above a fireplace is popular but terrible for your neck!

Frequently Asked Questions

How far should I sit from a 65-inch TV?

For a 4K TV, the ideal distance is between 5.5 and 8 feet. For a 1080p TV, you should sit further back, about 8 to 13.5 feet.

Is bigger always better?

Not always. If the TV is too big for the viewing distance, you might see pixelation or suffer from eye fatigue. However, most people regret buying too small rather than too big.

What is the 40-degree rule?

THX recommends that the screen fills at least 40 degrees of your horizontal field of view for a cinematic experience. This usually means a larger screen or sitting closer.
