💡 Expert Tips for Public Speaking
Aim for 130-150 WPM. This is the "Goldilocks" zone for audience comprehension. If you go below 110, people get bored. If you go above 170, people can't process the information fast enough. Most successful TED Talks clock in around 160 WPM, but they are highly rehearsed.
Account for pauses! This calculator assumes continuous speaking. In reality, you will pause for laughter, emphasis, or slide transitions. Rule of thumb: Add 10-20% to the calculated time for a live presentation.
Nerves make you faster. Adrenaline speeds up your internal clock. If you practice at 5 minutes at home, you might race through it in 4 minutes on stage. Practice speaking deliberately slow to counteract this.
