💡 Expert Tips
Rounding Can Make or Break You
Some teachers round up. Some don't. If you get 89.5%, will your teacher call that a B+ or bump it to an A-? Ask. Seriously. I've seen students miss honors by 0.3%. Don't leave it to chance.
Extra Credit Math
Extra credit works differently than you think. If a test is 50 points and you get 5 bonus points, you still divide by 50 (not 55). So 45/50 + 5 bonus = 100%. That's why extra credit is so clutch when you bomb one question.
The 10-Point Grading Scale Myth
Not all schools use the same scale. Some schools have 93% as the A cutoff. Some use 90%. A few use 94%. This calculator uses the standard 90/80/70/60 scale, but always check your syllabus.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
Swapping Numerator and Denominator
It's earned over possible. Not possible over earned. If you got 42 points on a 50-point test, it's 42 ÷ 50, not 50 ÷ 42. I've seen people accidentally calculate 119%. That's not how it works.
Forgetting Partial Credit
If you got half credit on a 10-point question, that's 5 points earned, not 0. Make sure you're adding up your actual score, not just counting what you got 100% correct.
Counting Skipped Questions
Skipped questions count as 0, not as "removed from the total." If the test is 100 points and you skipped a 10-point problem, you got 0/100, not whatever you earned out of 90. Unless your teacher explicitly said skipped = excluded.
📖 Understanding Your Grade
Got a test back and wanna know what you scored? Enter your points earned and total points possible. Calculator shows your percentage and letter grade. Takes 10 seconds.
This is the simplest grade calculation - just raw score converted to percent. No weighting, no curves, no "drop your lowest quiz" nonsense. Just straight math.
How It Works
The formula is dead simple:
Percentage = (Points Earned ÷ Total Points) × 100
Example: You got 42 out of 50 points.
42 ÷ 50 = 0.84
0.84 × 100 = 84%
Standard Grading Scale
Most schools use this:
- A = 90-100%
- B = 80-89%
- C = 70-79%
- D = 60-69%
- F = Below 60%
But some schools are stricter (93% for an A) or more lenient (88% for an A-). Always check your syllabus.
Plus and Minus Grades
If your school uses +/- grades, it usually breaks down like this:
- A (93-96%), A- (90-92%)
- B+ (87-89%), B (83-86%), B- (80-82%)
- C+ (77-79%), C (73-76%), C- (70-72%)
- And so on...
This calculator uses the simplified A/B/C/D/F system. If you need plus/minus precision, check your school's exact scale.
When to Use This Calculator
- After a test - See what you scored before your teacher posts grades
- Planning your study time - "If I get 85% on the final, what's my overall grade?"
- Checking teacher math - Teachers make mistakes. Verify your grade.
- Extra credit scenarios - See how much bonus points actually help
