💡 Expert Tips

The "Cross Multiply" Shortcut

When adding/subtracting fractions, you don't always need the "least common denominator." Just cross multiply. For 1/4 + 1/3: multiply 1×3 and 1×4, get 3+4=7 on top. Multiply 4×3=12 on bottom. Answer: 7/12. Way faster than finding LCD.

Improper Fractions Are Okay

When you get 9/4, some teachers want you to convert it to 2 1/4 (a mixed number). But in algebra and higher math, improper fractions are preferred. They're easier to work with. This calculator keeps it as an improper fraction - if your teacher wants mixed numbers, convert it yourself.

Simplify Early or Late?

You can simplify before or after calculating. Example: (2/4) × (3/6) = simplify to (1/2) × (1/2) = 1/4. Or multiply first: 6/24, then simplify to 1/4. Same answer, but simplifying early makes the numbers smaller and easier to handle.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

Adding Denominators

The biggest mistake: thinking 1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5. Nope. You add the numerators but keep the common denominator. Correct: 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. Never add the denominators.

Forgetting to Flip When Dividing

Division rule: flip the second fraction and multiply. (1/2) ÷ (3/4) becomes (1/2) × (4/3) = 4/6 = 2/3. If you forget to flip, you'll get the reciprocal of the right answer.

Not Simplifying Enough

If your answer is 6/9, you're not done. Simplify to 2/3. Teachers will mark you wrong for "correct but not simplified" answers. Always check if numerator and denominator share factors.
