Understanding Blood Alcohol Content (BAC)
BAC measures the percentage of alcohol in your bloodstream. A BAC of 0.10% means that 0.1% of your blood volume is alcohol. While it seems small, even 0.02% can affect your judgment and coordination.
⚠️ Critical Warning
Never drink and drive. This calculator is for educational estimates only. Your actual BAC depends on metabolism, food intake, medications, and genetics. If you've been drinking, call a cab or use a rideshare app.
BAC Levels & Effects
- 0.02% - 0.03%: Slight relaxation, mood elevation. Legal limit for under 21 in US.
- 0.05% - 0.06%: Impaired judgment, lowered alertness, release of inhibition.
- 0.08%: Legal Intoxication (US). Muscle coordination becomes poor (balance, speech, vision). Harder to detect danger.
- 0.10% - 0.12%: Clear deterioration of reaction time and control. Slurred speech.
- 0.15%+: Serious loss of balance. Vomiting may occur. Blackouts possible.
💡 Fact: The "One Hour" Myth
Many people believe they can drive if they wait one hour after drinking. However, alcohol takes time to absorb. Your BAC might actually peak 30-90 minutes after your last drink. Waiting an hour might put you behind the wheel at your highest intoxication level.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is BAC calculated?
This calculator uses the Widmark Formula, which considers the amount of alcohol consumed, your body weight, gender, and time elapsed. It assumes a standard drink contains 14g of pure alcohol.
What is the legal limit for driving?
In the United States and many other countries, the legal limit for driving is 0.08% BAC. However, impairment begins well below this level. Commercial drivers often have a lower limit (0.04%).
How long does it take to get sober?
The body metabolizes alcohol at a constant rate of about 0.015% to 0.020% per hour. Coffee, cold showers, or food will NOT speed up this process. Only time works.
